Our mission is to preserve the historic schoolhouse property in Shell, Wyoming, for the public good. Our vision is a scenic, multipurpose, self-sustaining public park and playground.
Rural schools have long been essential in shaping education and community life across the United States. The Shell Valley once had nine rural schoolhouses; today, ours is one of only two that remain, and the only one still owned by the public. A desire for outdoor public spaces, including a park and playground, surfaced as one of the top needs in the community. We believe the Historic Red Shell School can be part of the solution to that community need.
In early 2025, we developed a three-phase plan to preserve and update the building and transform the grounds into a park and playground. In November we completed the first phase by installing 24 new windows, new front doors and much needed insulation to improve the integrity and energy efficiency of the building. Currently, we are in the early stages of renovating the interior which should be completed by spring 2026. This brick fundraiser is our next step to raising the funds for the park! The engraved bricks will form a pathway to the front steps and planned rural education history exhibit. The funds raised by the bricks will help us create play space for Shell children and visitors, and improve the outdoor area with pathways and sitting areas for all to use.
