The Sandusky Pioneer Committee intends to fulfill a long dormant idea to install a bust of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in downtown Sandusky.
The Pioneer Committee has begun its campaign to raise $10,000 to purchase the bronze bust and build a foundation for it to be constructed at Freedom Plaza in the eastern portion of Washington Park between Washington Row and Washington Street.
The site dedication, held Tuesday April 4th 2017 , featured Pastor Thomas Darden and several other local dignitaries as speakers.
The bust idea was first presented to Pastor Darden by the late Rev. Richard R. Ashburn almost 40 years ago. At that time, the $400 price tag for the bust was out of reach.
Today the bust is $7,000 and the foundation will be $3,000. Undeterred, The Pioneer Committee is asking your organization and its individual members to support the effort by buying paver bricks for the foundation for as little as $100 for an 8x4 brick with 3 engraved lines, $500 for an 8x8 brick with 4 engraved lines, or $1000 for a 12x12 brick with a custom design.
Thank you for your support. Please make checks out to the Pioneer Committee and contact Jennifer Ashburn to place your orders at the number at the bottom of the page.
Sincerely, The Pioneer Committee
