West Side Park Fire and Police Memorial Committee Fire and Police Memorial

In 2007, the Fire and Police Memorial Committee began a campaign to replace the dilapidated Fire and Police Memorial in West Side Park, originally constructed in 1913.  The memorial site was created as a tribute to Champaign police officers and firefighters who have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty.  The memorial currently honors three police officers and one firefighter; Officer Thomas Dodsworth (7/6/1913),  Officer Robert Tatman (11/25/1967), Officer Chris Oberheim (5/19/2021) and Fireman Edward Hoffman (3/5/1960).

Thanks to the generosity of the community as well as fellow police officers and firefighters, money was raised to complete this project.  In March 2010, the concrete base, granite centerpiece, flagpole, inground lighting and brick pavers were completed.  In 2014, two life-sized bronze statues were added.

Since then, more than 200 pavers have been replaced with engraved bricks bearing messages from memorial donors.  About 100 blank pavers remain for engraving.  These engraved bricks are a lasting testament made by individuals and businesses in our community who support and appreciate those who strive to keep our neighborhoods safe.  The money raised through future brick sales will be applied towards future maintenance and enhancements of the memorial site.
