SAFE, Inc. of
Transylvania County has been providing emergency shelter and
services to battered women and children and victims of
rape/sexual abuse for over 20 years. Because we could only
house 8 people at a time, we had to turn away 116 people in a
recent 2-year period, because we
didn’t
have enough room. A year ago, we were fortunate enough to be
able to purchase another facility where we have enough bed space
for 16 people and can put more on air mattresses and sofas when
necessary.
We recently had 23 clients in our shelter,
12 of which were children. We never want to have to turn away a
victim in need again. Because the need for our services
continues to grow, we are going to enclose the existing carport
and breezeway to create more livable, and particularly
handicapped accessible, space.
