Thank you for supporting Classroom on Wheels (COW) Brick campaign to fund construction of the new Central Texas Literacy Center!  This center will be built in east Austin on 51st St., and will serve as a base of operations for COW’s Literacy Commando Teams, as well as expand access and availability to our programs among traditionally underserved citizens from throughout central Texas.

Classroom on Wheels was founded by Konrad Bouffard, an award-winning public school teacher, with the support of a grass-roots coalition of parents, business professionals, and educators.  From its humble beginnings in 2004, Classroom on Wheels volunteers have provided a variety of vital literacy services to the local community.  For example, in 2005 our Literacy Commandos joined forces with other volunteer groups at the Austin Convention Center to serve the Katrina evacuees staying there.  COW was called in because the majority of evacuees could not read or write, and therefore could not use the internet to locate missing loved ones.  Since our volunteers are usually retired librarians or teachers, and/or university-level education students, they were perfectly suited for this sort of work.  COW provided over one thousand hours of aid helping evacuees, and helped numerous evacuees locate family members presumed dead or otherwise “unlocatable”, without spending even one dollar of city funds to do so.   More recently, COW volunteers have worked hard with area high schools to install our acclaimed Financial Planning Program, benefiting students in Austin and Manor independent school districts.  This program will increase the practical awareness students have of their own finances, and reduce future cases of bankruptcy and foreclosure, benefiting us all.

Since January of this year, Classroom on Wheels has raised in excess of $100,000 in cash and in-kind donations from corporate donors and concerned public citizens. For this campaign, our corporate sponsors are covering the cost of mailing this letter to you, and a follow-up phone-a-thon July 10-12.  Due to the generosity of our benefactors, all of the monies raised directly benefit the new literacy center.

Classroom on Wheels is a 501(c)3 organization (EID # : 20-3187348).
