Children’s Day Nursery and
Family Center, one of the oldest childcare centers in the
country, opened its doors to the community in 1892 at a rental
site on Jefferson Street. After the turn of the century, the
Center’s Founding Mothers
campaigned
vigorously to raise money so they could build a more permanent
“home away from home” that they could call their own. The
stately brick building that is pictured on this page is that
home. This site at 104 Jefferson Street has been providing child
and support services to the neediest families in the area for
the past century. A generous 2006 grant enabled us to give a
facelift to the building’s façade. It now presents as handsomely
as it did at its opening celebration in 1907.
However,
there are still many other pressing renovations to the inside of
the building that should be made. Your participation in our
Donor Brick Campaign will help fund many of the needed repairs
and renovations to the interior space
• Replacement of the cracked and worn floor tiles in 8
classrooms. Even the littlest feet can wear a floor out over
time.
• Replacement of the entrance hall tiled floor. Three hundred
forty feet have passed through this hall at least twice a day
for the past 10 years…. That’s a minimum of 1,774,800 footsteps.
No wonder that the tiles are worn and cracked.
• Replacement of the sub-floor and tiles in our kitchen, where
135 meals and 250 snacks are prepared, cooked, and served 261
days a year.
• Ripping up the carpet and restoring the hardwood floors in the
central office
• Putting a fresh coat of paint on our 8 classrooms.
Personalized Donor Bricks (4”x8”) are being offered at $100 each
and will be proudly mounted and displayed on the wall of the
hallway that connects the new and original parts of the
building. You may personalize your donor brick with 3 lines of
text, 18 characters per line.
